Ojai wants natural stone, and that suits us. The valley’s architecture runs to adobe, board-and-batten and Spanish revival, and the masonry that belongs with it is dry-laid fieldstone, boulder outcrops set to look like they were always there, and flagstone laid with wide joints that can grow moss on the shaded side. Sawn concrete block reads wrong on most of these properties, so when structure calls for it we build in block and face the whole thing in stone.
Properties up East End and along the Grand Avenue oaks come with two constraints: root systems you cannot trench through, and long driveways your material has to travel. We hand-carry and wheel material in more often here than anywhere else in the county, and we set footings around roots rather than through them, which sometimes means a wall gets designed around a tree instead of a tree getting removed for a wall.
The summer heat in the valley is real, and it changes how concrete and mortar are handled. Pours get scheduled early, mixes are kept cooler, and slabs are covered and kept damp rather than left to flash off in an afternoon. Rushing a hot pour is what produces the map cracking you see across so many valley patios. How long does a masonry project take?
A paver patio usually takes two to five days. A retaining wall runs three to seven days depending on length and height. A full outdoor kitchen build is a two to four week project once gas and electrical are in the picture. Size, weather, access and material lead times decide the schedule, and you get a start and finish date in writing before we mobilize.
Do you need a permit for masonry work?
Retaining walls over four feet, structural concrete slabs, and outdoor kitchens carrying gas or electrical typically require permits. Repairs in kind, low garden walls and most patio work do not. We handle the permitting as part of the service, including the engineering when a wall needs a stamp, and we meet the inspector so you do not have to take a day off for it.
